Up for the #HoneycombChallenge?

Talk about taking kid’s play to a new level, Netflix’s latest Korean series “Squid Game” definitely captured many viewers’ attention, not for its nostalgic children’s games but for its literally do-or-die setup. Many are left at the edge of their seats as they watch 456 players battle it out for a chance to win a whopping 45.6 billion Korean won.

Apart from its nail-biting scenes, presentation of strategies, and out-witting opponents, the show also introduced to viewers what makes childhood days in Korea fun, from games like Red Light, Green Light and Squid Game. Particularly in episode three “The Man with the Umbrella,” viewers got to know one of Korea’s popular street snacks, the dalgona candy. Significantly, the show revived the craze for the sweet treat. And for us who are new to it, we are enticed to know what it tastes like, or better yet, how would we do if we are to do it on the games.

Lucky for us, making that honeycomb toffee is probably way easier than taking out its stamped shape. Tiktok user Karen Thi (@bakersmanncookies) shared her recipe on how you can whip up dalgona candy in your own kitchen. Here’s how she did it:

@bakersmanncookies Reply to @speedrundeeznuts4life This is a traditional candy in Korea called Dalgona. But honeycomb is used in different cultures! #squidgame #squidgamenetflix Nami – Osoku

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp of regular white sugar
  • Baking soda

Equipment:

  • Ladle
  • Spoon
  • Non-stick pan
  • Flat bottom metal pan
  • Shapes cookie cutter

Procedure:

  1. Put the sugar into a ladle and heat it on medium heat.
  2. Heat the sugar around slowly until it starts melting into a deep golden amber color.
  3. Once it is all melted, add a good pinch of baking soda and mix well.
  4. Remember not to put too much baking soda, or else it will create big bubbles and affects the taste of the candy.
  5. When you’ve achieved a light foamy mixture, pour it onto a non-stick baking sheet.
  6. While still hot, press it firmly with a flat bottom metal pan.
  7. Right after taking the pan, take your shape and press it gently to leave its mark.
