“The man who is swimming against the stream knows the strength of it.” Woodrow Wilson

Lozada family

Who remembers the Bert Lozada Swim School way back in oue younger years? Bert was teaching kids, younsters and seniors how to swim to save our lives in school pools, athletic clubs, community pools, and private pools!

I was working with Oscar Arellano in Operation Brotherhood Inc. and part of our training was learning to swim. He enrolled the office staff in a Lozada school. Never mind, I was a lousy student! But Bert’s sons, Anthony and Angelo were excellent coaches! Anyway, Bert Lozada has passed away but his sons, Anthony and Angelo and daughter Susie have carried on their fathe’s advocacy to greater heights.

Continuing their dad’s advocacy, Anthony and Angelo became the two top swim coaches in the country, Anthony was even enrolled by his father in an eight-months senior coaching program in Germany . He has trained competitive swimmers for international games and many of his pupils have come home with gold, silver and bronze medals on local swim meets the Lozada swimmer also shone in meets.

But when the pandemic hit the country, Anthony and Angelo had to close all BLSS and begin a life from the very bottom .The water crisis, the Taal eruption and then the lockdown because of the pandemic…all pools closed all BLSS and the Lozada teachers from all over the country, had to be dismissed, much to the pain of the two brothers who paid for the fees of their faithful teachers from their own posckets ( and their mother’s).

They went bankrupt and now had to live by their small savings and the grace of God.In their darkest days, Angelo and Anthony discovered God and their faith.

Anthony was never deeply religious but he learmed to turn to the Lord in his need. Now he confesses, “ My approach to coaching now is more Christ centered when i joined the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals(BCBP). My wife and I joined this community back in 1999. My wife and I were having difficulty in having a baby after 3 years of marriage. We felt we wanted to be closer and get to know Jesus.”

The couple’s spirituality grew in this community and Anthony was able to use his re-energized faith in his coaching.

“I believe that i am only an assistant coach and my Head Coach is Jesus. I pray to Jesus my head coach regularly. I listen and follow his guidance in how a deal with my coaching profession and athletes. My responsibility is to serve my athletes and not vice verza. What is important for me is to my God- given talents in serving my athletes, helping them achieve their dreams no matter how small and big it may be.”

Since he started his Christ- centered approach in coaching, Anthony says he has less stress now and he is able to deal with frustrations and disappointments unlike before.

“I know God is watching over me and my athletes and whatever happens is according to his will for as long as we do our job well.”

In this pandemic, Angelo and Anthony were forced to develop online teaching classes but it is very hard to have online swimming lessons because of safety concerns. “ So this is why we developed BFIT(Bert lozada FITness intelligence system). BFIT is an online fitness program that helps Kids and Adults stay fit and boost their immune system through various exercises that they can do in the safety of their homes.”

Angelo and Anthony are new in this field and are the “new kids on the block”. up against major players in this industry. “ And the fact that we cater mostly to kids is also a huge challenge for us because online fitness hasn’t been developed yet here in the country. “ Anthony notes

Anthony Joseph Lozada with his wife Eloisa and daughter Keona Marie.

Their BFIT program is also important for kids because now that they are not in school they are not as active. Gone are the times when they would run around the school, go to parks to play or even walk in malls. Kids and adults need to move and stay active so that they boost their immune system by exercising.

‘This is why we developed BFIT because we want the kids to be active again even for just an hour and in the safety of their homes.” Angelo added.

Their prayer now is for Blss to safely operate again because they honestly not know until when their savings can sustain them . Their dream is for BFIT to be as big as Blss so that they can hire more teachers and provide them with jobs. This was also the objective of BLSS, Anthony noted. Their Papa Bert wanted to provide livelihood to people through the swim schools that he created and his children want to continue his advocacies like teaching kids with dissabilities(physical and intellectual).

“God has already blessed us. “ revealed Anthony, “ because now we have our country’s first two visually impaired triathletes. I am also head coach of our National team for PWD(Person’s With Disability). I have athletes who are arm and leg amputees.”

Their mommy Zenas , pianist par excellance, is still as strong as ever, thanks to God Anthony said. She’s still very active in guiding her sons with our business and family. Their omly sister Susie, also a champion sw immer and coach is now in the US. “Mommy is our anchor and strength She makes sermon to us when we make mistakes and she sends us pizza and delicious food when we do a good job,” Anthony chuckles

In order to adapt to the current situation, the activities they are doing as of the moment at the Bert Lozada Fitness Intelligence Training (BFIT) with t he goal of – online fitness and sports platform to boost physical and mental heal are programs for BFit Active Kids – Fitness / Physical Education (PE) program for kids 5-17yrs old;BFIT Fem – Fitness programs tailor made for women ;BFIT Strong – Strength and Conditioning programs for competitive swimmers.BFIT Sports – Online Sports Skills Clinic for kids. Volleyball, Taekwondo, Basketball, Triathlon and BFIT EveryJUAN – Fitness programs for Home/Corporate essential workers and frontliners (Kasambahays, Drivers, Security Guards, Janitor, etc.)

And get this,,,there is a Bert Lozada Swim School (BLSS) Mobile Swim School (MobiSwim) as a “home service learn to swim “ program for babies 6months old to adults. Bringing BLSS at the safety and convenience of your home. BLSS@Home.BLSS “New Normal” Summer Swim 2021 – swimming lessons in some BLSS venues for infants, kids and adults.

The “New Normal” of doing swim lessons making use of our KEEP SAFE protocols:all swim teachers regularly does self covid health assessment before going to location. Results are sent to BLSS Covid Assessment Officer and Clients. If at least one of the assessment questions is a yes, the swim teacher will be advised to stay home until further tests are made. Same goes for our students.

– Swim teachers are required to wear a BLSS provided face mask at all times snce covid does not survive in chlorinated water, Teachers with BLSS face masks are to make sure they regularly soak the mask in the chlorinated pool water by submerging their heads. This will protect the swim teacher and their students from aerosols.

– Once a week testing using FDA approved Covid Antigen Test Kits. Results shall be sent to BLSS Covid Assessment Officer and Clients. Company Covid protocols shall be implemented if there will be a positive result.

– Parents still do not see the importance of being physically active not only for their kids but also themselves in order to improve their immune system and mental health.Anthony explains that by improving immune system by exercising is a preventive way of not getting infected or the effect will be less as compared to those who are not physically active.

“For our swimming lessons: parents may be still hesitant to have face to face lessons with swim teachers but they should realize that the virus won’t survive in a properly maintained pool facility.“ Anthony esplained.

Since 2019 when the Lozadas got locked down and a lot of restrictions were made by the government in order to keep the people safe, business wise it has been really bad, the feeling was as if BLSS got the covid and is in critical condition and is currently being intubated, Anthony noted.

However , the family has have to adjust and adapt and are in full “dependency on the presence of our heavenly Father. We are taking care of two seniors, my mom and mother in law so we really have to be very careful in how we move coz they are high risk from etting infected. But what the blessing that this pandemic gave us is that our family is much closer now that we get to spend a lot of time together. We are much closer now to our children and also our parents. “

. But what Anthony is truly thankful for is that their ‘ spiritual walk as a family ‘really improved. They get to discuss more as a family as to who God is and “how much He loves us all. We have a deeper personal relationship with Him. Another blessing is that we can now exercise together as a family. We do it everyday except Sunday.”

The family of Anthony is his wife Eloisa, a flight purser with PAL but is on leave without pay because of the lockdown, and his pretty daughter Keona Marie, a Sports Science junior at the UP and who is on the varsity swimming team!

Even in this pandemic, swimming is still a life skill that everyone should learn. Drowning is still one of the leading cause of accidental death and with the long lockdown and with the easing of restrictions, the risk of drowning will increase because people are excited to go outdoors and go to the pool, beach or lakes. With the sedentary lifestyle that this pandemic is causing, kids needs to move and be active Anthony stressed.

“ There is a deterioration of physical and mental health not only with kids but also adults. Obesity and Mental Health problems are now increasing. In order to prevent this, boosting one’s immune system is very important and we can do this with proper nutrition and developing a fit and active lifestyle. We have helped a lot of kids and adults with regards to this. Our BLISS is now celebrating 65 years of changing people’s lives and we aim to continue!”
