While sustainability and social responsibility is far from Mr. Dior back in the 1950s, his concept of a “recharge” lipstick was definitely ahead of its time.

In an interview with Dior Makeup creative and image director Peter Philips by Vogue, he admitted that he’s been trying to be more responsible since he joined the design house in 2014. “The first Rouge Dior was refillable,” he shares. Christian Dior created three versions in 1953—an obelisk container that served as an objet d’art for your vanity table, a regular lipstick which you can bring with you, and the actual refills. “You could pick your shade and fit them into either one of those lipstick (holders),” explains the Belgian makeup artist.

He went back to the past and drew inspiration from it, giving Dior’s first refillable lipstick a fresh new look with its sleek and minimalist lipstick case with CD silver monogram and signature band near the base. You can switch lippie refills just by unscrewing them from its luxe casing.

In his Instagram account, he posted, “Go check out our new Rouge Dior lipstick line, four finishes and more shades than you can imagine. Rechargeable package, super comfortable formula injected with natural ingredients, new lip liners.” The photos show him as he puts on makeup on Dior ambassador Natalie Portman who’s wearing the iconic and classic red shade 999.

Rouge Dior has over 75 colors in satin, matte, metallic, and velvet textures. According to the site, this long-wearing lipsticks last for 16 hours and has lip care ingredients of red peony and pomegranate floral extracts.
